WALKING

Hadrian's Wall National Trail runs through Green Croft and the Pennine Way is half a mile way.

PARKING

We have limited parking onsite. You can walk from the the nearest car parks at

  • Thirlwell Castle car park, between Greenhead and Longbyre along the B6318 (Grid Ref: NY 658 659)

  • Gilsland car park, next to Gilsland Primary School (Grid Ref: NY 631 662)

  • On street parking in Gilsland Village

BUS

Take the AD122

  • Get off the bus at Greenhead

  • Walk down the lane between The Forge Cafe and Greenhead Village Hall

  • Take the footpath to the right, signed the Pennine Way and Thirlwall Castle

  • Cross the Tipalt Burn at the bridge and walk along the footpath with the burn on your left.

  • Where the footpath meets the Pennine Way / Hadrian’s Wall path turn left towards the railway tracks

  • Cross the railway tracks at the designated crossing. Warning STOP LOOK LISTEN.

  • Pass the row of houses and at the gate turn right towards the sign saying Hadrian’s Wall path

  • Cross the road and walk along the B6318.

  • Take the footpath signed Hadrian’s Wall Path / Gilsland to Green Croft  

 

The AD122 bus is the main route serving Hadrian's Wall. It runs hourly for most of the day between Hexham Bus Station and Haltwhistle Rail Station via Hexham Rail Station, Acomb, Wall, Chollerford, Chesters Roman Fort, Housesteads Roman Fort, The Sill, Vindolanda, Milecastle Inn, the Roman Army Museum, Walltown Quarry and Greenhead.

Take the 185 

  • Ask to get off the bus at Gilsland Crossgates on B6318

  • Walk down the lane signed Chapel House Farm to Green Croft

TRAIN

The nearest train station is Haltwhistle Rail Station, just over 4 miles away. It is located on the Tyne Valley Line serving the Newcastle - Carlisle trains.

 

AD122 and 185 bus services pick-up and drop off at Haltwhistle station.

CYCLE

Hadrian's Cycleway, signed as National Route 72, is at the top of the lane.
