Kate Halsall - Outlier
Field recording, spoken word and transformed piano come together in a new soundscape inspired by the outlying rural Fellfoot communities and environments of Westmorland and Northumberland.
Kate Halsall is a pianist, composer and collaborator, whose solo performances often combine old/new music with improvised elements and electronics written by her and for her, by composers including Pippa Murphy, Fumiko Miyachi, Leo Chadburn and Diana Salazar amongst many others. She grew up rurally on North Stainmore in the Upper Eden Valley, Cumbria and then trained at the Royal College of Music in London. She worked in London for 25 years and then returned to the North, where she’s worked since across the North West and North East, creating new projects with a number of ensembles and other artists.
Kate has collaborated closely with a variety of musicians including Joel Bell, Sarah Dacey, Ruth Goller, Fumiko Miyachi, Melanie Pappenheim and Stephen Hiscock; with groups from Fretwork to Bill Bruford. She’s worked a number of new music ensembles and companies: including Opera North, Mahogany Opera, as pianist/director in Piano Circus, for Andrew Poppy’s Sustaining Ensemble, with Michael Clark Dance Company (OH MY GODDESS 2003, as pianist for In Place by Colin Riley, and for Ockham’s Razor aerial theatre company (Graham Fitkin’s Not Until We Are Lost).
