About the Event

Do you have memories, stories, photos, family films of Gilsland Village life during the 1970’s and 1980’s? Then we need you!!!

Our Trailblazer Exhibition featuring the life and work of famous electronic music composer Delia Derbyshire who lived in Gilsland between 1974 and 1980 will open to visitors in The Threshing Barn at Green Croft On The Wall during the summer 2024.

To help visitors have a better understanding of what life was like living in Gilsland during this time we would like to create a broadsheet newspaper called The Gilsland Packet and we need the community's help to fill it with photos, news, stories of local life and business adverts of the day. We are hosting two drop in days at Gilsland Village Hall where you can share your memories, photo’s movies or ephemera and we will digitise or record these for you. To thank you we will be offering complimentary tea, coffee and cake.

Gilsland Village Hall

Saturday 16th March from 12.00pm - 5.00pm

Saturday 6th April from 12.00pm - 5.00pm.

If you can’t make it to these sessions we would still like to hear from you. Get in touch by emailing Amanda on info@greencroftonthewall.com

We are particularly interested in memories, stories, photos, film and ephemera of

  • Dinmont House, where Delia lived.
  • The Samson Inn. Delia drank at The Samson and joined the ladies darts team.
  • The Chinese artist Li Yuan-chia and The LYC museum at Banks. Delia worked in the gallery at the museum. Did you visit as a child?
  • Gilsland Show
  • Activities at Gilsland Village Hall
  • The Brampton gas pipeline being laid between Longtown near Carlisle to the east of Bishop Auckland by Laing’s Engineering. The pipeline is a section of the Frigg pipeline carrying natural gas from the North Sea to near Peterhead in Scotland. The headquarters for the Laing contract was located at an old quarry near Brampton. Delia worked as a French speaking radio operator for Laing's Engineering
