Willow Bird Feeders with Ruth Thompson

Friday 19th July 10.00am - 12.30pm 

Time: 2.5 hour workshop

Cost: £45.00 including tea, coffee, homemade cakes of biscuits. 

Materials & P&P: There will be an additional charge of £5 for materials which is payable to Ruth on the day. 

Experience: All of these workshops are suitable for beginners, but intermediate students would also enjoy them. 

Group size: The workshop runs with between 8 - 10 participants per session. 

Ruth is leading 2 sessions;  Willow Bird Feeders 10.00am - 12.30pm and Willow Platter 2.00 - 4.30pm in the afternoon. If both are booked then a homecooked lunch will be provided and you are welcome to relax in the garden or take the opportunity to take a walk along Hadrian's Wall from the door over the lunch break. 

Join Ruth in creating stylish, biodegradable bird feeders to hang in the garden or for the kitchen to hold onion or garlic. Ruth will guide you in making 2 types of bird feeders, a simple one where one gets the feel for working with Willow takes about 30 minutes at the most. Then a more complex one in which one will learn various willow weaving techniques including plain weaving, pairing and possibly three rod or four rod waling and using wooden formers. Each bird feeder is handcrafted making it unique to you.

Ruth is based at Mickley Northumberland, with extensive experience of working with communities and groups across the North East. She teaches basketry, willow art workshops, and heritage coppice crafts; and undertakes commissions for hurdles, sculptures, living willow structures, baskets, obelisks etc . As an experienced mentor she teaches trainees and volunteers.
